Impatiens capensis
(aka: Touch-Me-Nots)
Traditionally used as a TOPICAL for skin issues. Most popular for Poison Ivy rash, for good reason.
Hummingbirds love the orange flowers, which appear later in the Summer.
Self seeds prolifically and will easily take over a patch within a couple of years. Plant it where you want a bed of it, or remove flowers before going to seed. Those seeds are wrapped in a coil-spring mechanism which will shoot them several feet away. When ripe, the slightest touch will send them flying.
Very shallow-rooted annual, very easy to remove to control its location. Simply hand-pull to thin out.
In average soil, grows about 3’-4’ tall. In rich soil/compost it can easily clear 5’-6’. Space farther apart for stronger, larger plants with thicker stems
Grows in full sun to partial shade.
Prefers damper soils. Not fond of drought.
If you’ve got a damp tree line area, it will be very happy, like a border planting to your woods. (see photo #2)
Deer generally leave it alone, but will eat it if nothing else around.
A ‘must have’ plant.
