HELPFUL TIPS FOR PLANTING YOUR TOMATOES

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PURCHASING YOUR HEIRLOOM TOMATO PLANTS FROM MY ROADSIDE STAND!!

These plants had a very good quality granular organic fertilizer (7-6-12, w/2.3% Magnesium) added shortly before you took them home.  This fertilizer is a slow-release, very small size (hard to see it in the pot, but it's there!).
Be sure to get everything in the pot (the entire root ball and all of the soil) in the ground when you plant these out.

GARDEN PLANTING:
FULL SUN LOCATION !!!  (as many hours of daylight as possible)
GOOD DRAINAGE

SPACING:
18" / 24" / 36"  ... between plants within the row are usually recommended.  Can depend on your staking/trellising/caging method.
5' - 6' between rows.

Plant deeply: -post hole diggers or trench-planting are both excellent techniques.
Remove all leaves (pinch off) along the part of the stem that will go in the ground, and back-fill in with the soil.
(*While handling, be careful not to break the growing point/tip.  If you do, I would recommend getting another plant to replace it, ideally.  Please see the note regarding replacement plants at the bottom of this page.)
If staking or vine training, do so at time of planting to avoid root damage.
If tying to stakes, about every 12" or so of growth works.  (tie the knot behind the post, -not at the vine)
Most of these varieties are indeterminate and can easily grow several feet long.  (I will post a Chart of Vine Lengths at the end of the growing season to give you a better idea for planning next year.)

CONTAINER PLANTING:
Plant deeply.
Staking, trellising or caging now would be ideal.

WATER:
Water in thoroughly, immediately after transplanting.

Water at least once per week (depending on the amount of rain we've had, and/or the weather, and drainage).
-Can water more frequently if your garden drains very well or if it's drying out fast (every 4 days or so).
Just watch to be sure the plants are not standing in water.
A good, deep thorough soaking with each watering to help promote strong, deep root growth.
Ideally, water at cooler times of the day (early AM or later in the afternoon).
Water at the base of the plant (not wetting the foliage, to avoid disease problems).

FERTILIZERS & SUPPLEMENTS:
If you use Organic gardening methods, a few good options:
*Espoma Veggie/Tomato Fertilizers, Fish Emulsion (like Alaska or Neptune's), Seaweed, Chicken Manure, *Espoma Rock Phosphate

* = These two granular fertilizers I mix into the hole at time of planting.
Fertilize periodically throughout the growing season, according to label instructions.

FOR NON-ORGANIC FERTILIZERS:
I used to have very good results with Miracle Gro (Regular or Tomato)

BED MULCHING:
I personally prefer straw.  Even better if it's manured bedding from chickens.
Black plastic works well.

For more useful information, -check out the links on the GROWING TIPS page.

FOR THE BEST RESULTS:
Full sun
Plant deeply!!
Water and feed well

The plants you purchased have good vigor and are at a perfect stage to plant out.
Once they are settled in and happy they will take off.

Good Luck!!
Wishing you an awesome growing season and an abundant harvest!!
